Being the best you can be is a lifelong journey. This breakout sessions in this symposium aim to raise awareness about wellbeing, stimulate discussion and help individuals discover what they need to establish and maintain their own sense of wellbeing.

Breakout sessions are organized around six pillars of health and wellness.

Moment for Life 
Mindful Self-Compassion for Everyday Life
「靜」渡難關:生活中的靜觀自我關懷

Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to respond to everyday stress with care and kindness. It is a healthier way of relating with ourselves. 
This experiential workshop introduces the concept of self-compassion and some of the practices to cultivate mindfulness and self-compassion in everyday life.

Health and Happiness:
Things the doctor doesn’t always tell you  

The World Health Organization defines health as a state of physical, psychological and social well-being not the absence of disease. How does the science of well-being impact our views of health and vice versa? Dr Owens will discuss his experience from the management of Tuberculosis and malnutrition to Olympic athletes. What practical lessons can be taken from the evolving evidence for improving health and well-being?

Managing Personal Finance: Tips and Apps

This session will cover various practical tips and useful apps including budgeting and expenses tracking, how to set saving goal and plan with Saving Goal Calculator, and usage of using E-Wallets and E-payment apps for managing personal finance.

HKU Herb Garden: Connecting with Nature

HKU Herb Garden aims to nurture a community that shares the same concern on health, environment and our future. In this session, participants will get to know a variety of herbs and understand the respective benefits. They will also have a chance to grow their own plants.

Lung Fu Shan Shinrin Yoku (Forest Bathing)

Shinrin Yoku is the practice of immersing oneself in the forest for rejuvenation, pleasure and wellbeing. 

The experience will equip participants with ways to connect with nature.

Rhythm for Life 
(music and movement for wellbeing)
踏出身心快樂

Rhythm is everywhere: in music, in the body, and in nature. Rhythm brings order and structure to life and moving to rhythm, on the other hand, gives us a sense of synchrony and enjoyment.  In this workshop, we try to experience and embody the joy of playing with rhythm, and hope to rediscover new energy and vitality in our lives.

Stretch the Body and Mind

We all know that sitting for an extended periods of time is not good for our health and wellness, even though roughly 80 percent of jobs are now considered sedentary. Stretching and strengthening exercises that reduce muscle fatigue and improve core strength can lead to a better posture and general well-being.

A “Taste” of Mindfulness

Mindfulness refers to the moment-by-moment awareness through paying attention to the present. While regular practices help us to cultivate awareness, this seemingly abstract concept can indeed be applied to our daily routine as simple as eating.                                                                           

 

In this session, you will have the chance to experience mindfulness by enjoying snacks and tea, while some important concepts of mindfulness will be introduced.

Painting and Stress Management 

The sharing session will allow participants to vent their stress and frustration they encounter in the daily life, thereby attaining inner peace and emotional equilibrium.

The Road to Better Sleep

On average, we spend one third of time asleep throughout our life. Sleep affects our mood and health and can have a major impact on the quality of our life. In this session, you will gain better understanding on your overall sleep quality as guided by a validated screening questionnaire. You will then learn effective ways to build up good sleep habits and practices that  can be conveniently applied to get a good night’s sleep.

Taking Care of Elderly
(Well-being for you and your aging parents)

The speaker will talk about how to address the changing physical, psychological, and social needs of aging parents, and share some effective communication skills and methods to express love and care so as to enhance the family cohesion and happiness.
